More Burglaries In The Neighborhood

image uploaded by Tux.Fux.ch on Flickr

David recently shared that he and another THIH writer both recently had their houses broken into, and were told by the police that there has been a recent surge in robberies on Capitol Hill.  After reader David’s post, a reader shared another story with us that we wanted to pass on.  One of the best tools we have in a community like this is to watch out for one another.  If you see something suspicious, please speak up and say something.

As a resident of the hill, I am an avid reader of your blog.  In regards to the “Surge in Capitol Hill Burglaries” post (this got my attention a few days ago),  I wanted to give you the heads up my home was broken into this morning around the 11am hour (no one was home).  The burglar tried entering through our back kitchen window on the basement level.  The person jumped over our large brick fence to get to our backyard private space.  The break-in wasn’t a sloppy job – the window panes were carefully removed, not causing glass to break (clearly wasn’t their first time).  There was a good bit of damage to the window frame, but nothing that can’t be fixed.  Once the window was officially opened the (very loud) alarm sounded, thus contacting ADT, the police and my husband and I.  The police believe at this time the person ran, thankfully.  Full entry into the home was not made and nothing was taken (to our knowledge).  With that said, I want people to be aware of this surge in break-ins.  If someone rings your doorbell in the middle of the day “selling something” or offering to sweep your stairs – keep an open eye that this person might be checking to make sure you’re not home, along with your neighbors.  When in doubt please call the police.   As a new homeowner will be my first holiday season on the hill, and with the holidays upon us, I fear the burglary rate in Cap Hill will continue to increase.  On a positive note, the police were very quick to the scene and waited for me to arrive.  They answered all of my questions onsite and did a wonderful job.  I would like my name and exact residence to remain anonymous, but I do live near C & 9th Street, NE.  This is a very stroller-friendly neighborhood, and I couldn’t ask for better neighbors or surroundings!  My husband and I look forward to many more holidays on the Hill! 🙂

Thank you,

Concerned Resident

Per the 11/1 story linked to the “surge” is 14 home burglaries in PSA 107 in the past 30 days (guessing that means October), a jump of 180% vs the same period in 2009. A 180% jump perhaps means 5 in Oct 2009 and 14 in 2010, if my math is right.

Question, tho, is this a jump, a surge, a trend, an outlier, or what?

Are there easily accessible home burglaries numbers by month for PSA 107 going back several years?

    Not just burglaries….

A friend texted me on 11/13 in the afternoon, just a few minutes after her two friends were simultaneously mugged near Eastern Market by two guys that seemed to be juveniles.

A pregnant Virginia woman gets car jacked on 10th.

I called police about 2 young women rolling drugs in dollar bills in Spielberg Park 17th and C SE (I snuck up to them and saw it dead on!) After police stopped them a few blocks away, the girls came back and threatened me and my husband because we called police. We called police again but the women took off. Police would not tell me where they lived.

A neighbor asked me to step outside on 11/14 to see a hypodermic needle in the alley on C St SE adjacent to the community garden. It was the same kind my neighbor’s kid found on her lawn and said “mommy what are these?” (They have orange tips.)

On 11/14 around 8 a.m., I cleaned two wine bottles, 6 beer cans, two drug bags, and several philly blunt wrappers from Spielberg Park 17th and C SE. I also noticed new graffiti in park.

In reading past posts, and while it’s encouraging that police said they’ll add more officers on foot, we need to recommend not only being visible on the sidewalks, but also in alleyways. Sounds like most of these break-ins are happening from back-doors, and most alleys are quiet during the day.

This morning (12/9) my roommate and I were leaving for work when we encountered two men on bicycles riding up and down the sidewalk in the area of 9th and C, NE. The two men then proceeded to chat with a man standing on the opposite corner. This suspicious activity looked to us as if these men were canvassing the street to see which homes might be empty during the day. We promptly reported this incident to the 1st precinct. However, the woman who took the report at the precinct seemed annoyed in having to deal with us and said patrol cars would be sent to investigate. Needless to say, this left neither of us at ease. Since when did being a concerned and vigilant resident call for attitude from the people who are supposed to be protecting our community? And what has become of all of those promises of heightened police presence?
