One of the wonderful things about living on the Hill is also one of the most vexing: our homes are old. And many are in a historic district. This unique set of circumstances means that a lot of us don’t know where to turn for help with renovations, zoning, permitting and other important questions as we care for our Hill homes.

Luckily, the Capitol Hill Restoration Society is here to help. Every month in the fall and spring, CHRS hosts its Preservation Cafe series at Ebenezer’s Coffeehouse at 2nd and F Streets NE. This month’s is tonight from 6:30-7:15 pm and tackles the topic of Preserving Wood Furniture and Cabinets. Admission is free.

From the CHRS website:

At the Capitol Hill Restoration Society’s Preservation Café on November 17, Daragh Cassidy will discuss the best ways to care for and maintain wood furniture and cabinetry, including conserving treasured antiques. He will also address joinery, finishes, and simple, minor repairs that homeowners can do. Mr. Cassidy, founder and owner of Galway Bay Woodworks on Capitol Hill, previously worked at the Smithsonian’s Museum of American History for nine years as a cabinetmaker and exhibits specialist.

“Preserving Wood Furniture and Cabinets” will be held Wednesday, November 17. Check the CHRS website for upcoming Preservation Cafes!
