The Hill is Home

Meet the Candidates: Sharee Lawler ANC 6A05

October 1st, 2010 by Sharee Lawler · 7 Comments · Capitol Hill North

We have offered to post brief statements from all of the ANC candidates running for seats on Capitol Hill and the surrounding neighborhoods that we cover here on The Hill is Home.  These statements are not endorsements and have been posted exactly as submitted by the candidates.

Sharee Lawler, ANC 6A05

I’m Sharee Lawler, a candidate for ANC 6A05.  Since I moved to this neighborhood nine years ago, I’ve become a strongly rooted member of the community.  I thoroughly enjoy volunteering as a citizen member of ANC 6A’s Economic Development & Zoning Committee, which I got involved with when I became interested in streetcars and started attending their meetings.

As a writer and editor for The Hill is Home since it began almost a year and a half ago, I keep my eyes and ears open to hot topics in our local area.  I care that many people are able to have their points of view heard and that readers of the blog have a daily resource for news and information about our community.

My company, Black Lab Advisory, a marketing and strategy consultancy for small businesses, keeps me well connected with other Capitol Hill businesses.  I serve on the board of CHAMPS, Capitol Hill’s Chamber of Commerce and started their Business Development Forum, which I lead each month.

Endorsements
I’m pleased and excited that my candidacy has been endorsed by these other respected and seasoned community leaders:

Mary Beatty, current 6A05 commissioner
Drew Ronneberg, 6A02 commissioner
Joe Fengler, former 6A02 commissioner
Cody Rice, former 6A03 commissioner

Priorities
Moving to Capitol Hill nearly a decade ago has had a profound impact on my pathway in life.  It has influenced my thinking about the importance of community involvement and inspired me to run for ANC.  Community involvement has become such a passion that it even inspired me to become an entrepreneur so I could be more active in my neighborhood.

As commissioner, my priorities would be:

- Commuter traffic: The volume of traffic streaming through our neighborhood makes this a significant day-to-day concern.  For the last year I’ve been writing about the C Street, NE Project for The Hill is Home, and staying abreast of resident-led traffic calming initiatives.  I’ll be a strong advocate for measures recognizing the residential nature of our streets.  Safe passage for pedestrians should take precedence over quick communing routes for Marylanders.

- Public safety: From acute incidents, like carjackings, to consistent problems, such as upticks in crime each summer, our neighborhood faces some complex safety issues.  While I agree with those who say that incidences of crime are dramatically lower compared to a decade ago, my view is that we must continue to focus on what we want our neighborhood to be, rather than just being glad its better than it was.  The safety and security of you, your family, your home and your belongings are of the highest importance to me.

- Economic development: Though SMD 05 is primarily residential, the commissioners of 6A are called upon to make decisions that impact the evolution of the H Street Corridor.  It is my view that well-considered economic development policy takes into consideration the needs and desires of the residential community it serves while encouraging businesses to have the freedom to invest and grow.

- Historic preservation: One of the features that make our community unique and desirable is its historic nature.  I believe that promoting the preservation of our historic architecture is beneficial to the quality of life in our neighborhood.

As a resident for almost a decade and a local business owner, I bring experience and local knowledge that will be valuable as a commissioner.  I’m also considered a strategic thinker and consensus-builder, two skills I think are important in governing.

Most importantly, I’m interested in hearing from you.  Email me with your questions, ideas and suggestions at sharee.lawler [at] gmail.com.

    Sharee,

I asked a question of Will, so I only think it’s fair that I ask you one too.

What are the pros and cons of your connections to Capitol Hill businesses in terms of representing residents? My wife is self-employed so I can see some appeal in having a commissioner who understands small businesses, the work-at-home crowd, and the joys of DCRA BBLs.

I suppose a concern could arise if any of your clients needed ANC approval. Would you recuse yourself if one of your clients had a matter before the ANC?

    CR:

    Thanks for your questions.

I am very deliberate when I make decisions. I look at things from every possible angle and try to put myself in each stakeholder’s shoes. I want all the facts, especially the hard ones, so I can fully understand whatever issue is before me. It is what that in mind that I approach your first question about the pros and cons of my relationships with Capitol Hill businesses.

I serve on the executive committee of CHAMPS, the Capitol Hill Chamber. That role puts me in a position to hear a number of views about business and economic development across the Hill. It undoubtedly enriches my perspective, but it is still only one perspective.

The other side of the coin is that, like the other members of the CHAMPS board and my fellow pajama commuters, I’m both a business owner and a neighborhood resident. You might be surprised to learn just how many brilliant businesses are run from these row houses. But first and foremost, its my neighborhood and I want to continue to make it a great place to live.

(And yes, I’ve pulled my hair out trying to get my BBL, and am most certainly about to do the same renewing my driver’s license at the DMV so, really, business owners and residents, we’re all often in the same boat.)

I also serve as treasurer on the board of the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop, so my volunteer/recreational interests certainly go beyond business organizations. Seeing the opportunities and challenges CHAW navigates while offering amazingly creative programs to children, and adults, is also very instructional.

With regard to your last question, there are many ways to gain the confidence of someone, but one of the best ways to loose it is to appear unethical. There’s no question I would recuse myself if a client had an issue before the ANC. I already serve on 6A’s Economic Development and Zoning Committee, so I’m familiar with how to deal with questions that come up in this regard.

  • DP

Sharee, I have seen your name come up several times over the past few years in myriad community events (didn’t you receive a “Hilly” last year). I just wanted to say, I think it is obvious that you are committed to our community and already a leader in our neighborhood. Thank you for the service you have given and for your willingness to continue to serve in this capacity. I am confident you will win. I can’t wait to vote for you.

  • Sharee Lawler

Thanks, DP, that’s very humbling. I did win a Hilly for Business Volunteer of the Year last year for volunteer work I did promoting Hill businesses. (BTW – voting is open until Nov. 4 for the 2010 Hilly’s over at capitolhill.org.)

I think this is the best neighborhood in the city and I wouldn’t trade my neighbors for anything. That makes me very excited about the possibility of serving in this new role.

It’s great to see independent business people like Sharee running for ANC. As we move through the stages of development on H Street, they can offer a lot of guidance to businesses and work effectively with city officials and agencies in support of the community.
Another advantage is that they’re around during the day when city offices are open and hearings are held. This can be a real burden on ANCs who have full time jobs that require them to be at a desk from 9 to 5.
Sharee has already cut her ANC teeth on the Economic Development and Zoning Committee so she should be able to hit the ground running and earn her keep. If the ANC paid her any money, that is… LOL
She would make a terrific commissioner.
