To Do List

Kenny Chesney got it right in his song “The Boys of Fall,” which serves as a tribute to small town football stars; fall is the season of the football player, be him small town quarterback or big time wide receiver. Beginning in September and lasting into the new year, our weekends, already filled with trips to the market, walks to the park and household chores, suddenly revolve around football.

While you may have plenty to keep you busy this weekend, don’t forget to check out all that our side of the city has to offer—after you are done rooting for your favorite team, of course.

Friday, September 24
This Friday marks the opening of Vivat Rex! at the Folger Shakespeare Library, where you can view documents examining the life of Henry VIII. The exhibit runs through December.

Saturday, September 25
From 11am until 5pm, visit 8th Street SE for the Barracks Row Fall Festival.  Tour the Marine Barracks and the Commandant’s House, partake in food and drink from local merchants and enjoy performances by local artists and the Redskin Cheerleaders.

In March, the Symphony Lounge concert at the Atlas was a sellout! If you missed it then, or you want to experience it again, this Saturday night is your chance. Join the Capital City Symphony for a special encore performance and CD release party. Tickets are still available online.

College students have Lollapalooza. Metal heads have Ozzfest. Bibliophiles have Bookfest. This year the Library of Congress celebrates Bookfest’s 10th anniversary with enough authors to satisfy even the most selective reader.

Sunday, September 26
Did you miss last week’s H Street Festival? Then why not catch a show at the Rock and Roll Hotel on H Street! This Sunday the Hotel welcomes Shonen Knife, Grass Widow, Daddy Lion and Foul Swoops. Not cool enough to know who these artists are? Check out their music MySpace. You know, the site that was eclipsed by Facebook.

All Weekend
While it is inevitable that we have to share our fair city with tourists, the flood of folks from across the country slows to a trickle when the school season starts. So why not take this opportunity to tour your city by partaking in any of a number of tours available this weekend? The Hill is Home’s Tim Krepp put together a very comprehensive list of tours available on the Hill this weekend, so get out there and see your city!

Phasefest is a three-day music and arts festival “dedicated to the development, exposure and interaction of queer and queer-allied musicians and artists.” Musicians, crafters, artists, artists and comedians are just some of the creative individuals you’ll meet beginning Thursday and running through Saturday.
