Meet the Candidates: Ken Jarboe ANC 6B05

We have offered to post brief statements from all of the ANC candidates running for seats on Capitol Hill and the surrounding neighborhoods that we cover here on The Hill is Home.  These statements are not endorsements and have been posted exactly as submitted by the candidates.

Ken Jarboe ANC 6B05

There is a very simple reason why I am running for re-election to the ANC — to continue to fight for our shared vision of a livable community.  We live in the one of the best neighborhoods in America.  Over the past few years, we have see a new vitality on Capitol Hill.  Just in ANC 6B alone, we have seen the revitalization of Barracks Row, the rebuilding and renewal of Eastern Market and the promise of the new Hill Center at the Old Naval Hospital.

To build upon our great assets, I will fight to assure that new projects, like the redevelopment of the former Hine Junior High, meet the needs of the people who live and work in the community.  I will also work to ensure that Barrack Row remains a vital retail center for our community.

I’ve been privileged to play a role in helping bring about the exciting changes of the past few years.  I’ve shown in my work as an ANC Commissioner that I can get things done.  I am proud of my efforts large and small to improve the neighborhood, including bringing Harris Teeter to the Hill, closing down a dangerous nightclub, and getting 4-ways stop signs on Independence Avenue and speed humps around Lincoln Park to slow down speeding commuter traffic.

I ask for your support on November 2 as Commissioner for ANC 6B05 so that we can continue working together to build, as Council Member Tommy Wells says, “a livable walkable city.”

    What was the dangerous nightclub?

And here we are 10 days later, waiting for Jarboe to post a response. That should tell you something about the constituent services of some of the ANC 6b incumbents.
In responsiveness and perhaps also in terms of web savvy (do you have a web page, Kenan Jarboe?), ANC 6b is way behind our surrounding and much more functional, much more transparent ANCs. Time for a change.

  3. Ken Jarboe says:

Tim — the night club in question was called Heart and Soul. It had long standing problem of violence. We tried to work with the owners on security and other issues such as valet parking) — to no avail. It was finally shut down after someone walked out of the club shooting at a car parked outside the front door. Although a number of rounds were fired, luckily no one was killed. That finally convinced the ABC Board about the validity of the arguments we had been making for over a year about the danger this club poised to the community. It was frustrating that it took so long for the ABC Board to listen to the community. But we finally prevailed. This is the type of fighting for our community that I am committed to continue on the ANC.

Didn’t Heart and Soul go through two owners before security fell apart, things got out of control, and it was shut down?

The way I remember it, it was a kinda nice, upscale buppie bar which served enough food to get by licensing, attracting young, well-dressed professionals.

In its second incarnation, it was run by a woman who was not a good manager, and things got out of control.

  5. Beverly Anderson says:

I want to personally thank Ken Jarboe for the attentiveness that he has given to our neighborhood. We are proud to recommend him and have nothing but good things to say about his responsiveness. He has assisted us in knowing what kind of permits we need for improvements. Moreover, he advocated for us when the City tried to ticket us for parking in our own driveway! He is a great neighbor and an effective and involved ANC Commisioner. I work and live on Capitol Hill.
