Meet the Candidates: Ivan Frishberg ANC 6B02

We have offered to post brief statements from all of the ANC candidates running for seats on Capitol Hill and the outer edges that we cover here on The Hill is Home.  These statements are not endorsements and have been posted exactly as submitted by the candidates.

Ivan Frishberg ANC 6B02

The Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC) is our most local connection to District government and the decisions that shape our neighborhood. There are big changes coming to the Capitol Hill/Eastern Market neighborhood that call for an active and engaged ANC to protect and build on what we love about where we live.

From the development of the old Hine School site and Friendship House to the remodelling of the Library of Congress Annex and the proposals to upgrade the Eastern Market Metro Plaza, the changes underway certainly offer many opportunities to build on our special neighborhood, but they also need a highly engaged community to succeed and protect the best qualities of life on Capitol Hill.

What I Will Work For

  • The development of the old Hine School and other large-scale projects in the neighborhood call for an active voice from the ANC to ensure that those changes build on the centerpieces of our community and protect its livability and walkability.
  • The ANC should create a citizen-led committee to look at the long-term issue of parking and transportation on the Hill.
  • The ANC should partner with local families who are working to find more space for schools and affordable childcare on the Hill.
  • The ANC is often our human connection to the city when we need a little extra help. I will work to make sure that it is more transparent and participatory and that residents’ voices are heard when it seems like the city isn’t listening.

About Me

I have lived and worked in 6b since 1994.  I work at a non-profit advocacy group on environmental issues and have been involved with a variety of local and national organizations that focus on sustainability, democracy and quality of life issues.   I live on the 600 block of D St. SE with a wonderful family that is dominated by two small children, one of whom just started in the Brent Elementary pre-school program.  I have been active in several issues locally and am a member of the Eastern Market Metro Community Association.

Over the last few years I started attending meetings around the development of the Hine School site, including meetings with the developers who had responded to the City’s RFP, as well as around the proposed re-routing of Pennsylvania Avenue that has been proposed by the Capitol Hill Town Square Task Force.    After watching these processes it became clear to me that we needed a more active ANC around these issues and others, and that I could do a good job at just that.  It will be an honor to serve the community interest in this way if elected.

The ANC will serve the community best when it is an active, transparent and engaged part of the important issues that affect our neighborhood – that will be my mission as your ANC commissioner.

Please visit my website and vote Ivan Frishberg for ANC6B02 this November.

  1. Three cheers for Ivan Frishberg for throwing his hat into the ring! It’s never easy for young families to participate in community meetings, let alone run ANCs. That’s part of why their voices are so seldom heard.

I first met Ivan many years ago when he was an education advocate. We became re-acquainted two years ago at a community meeting. Since then, he has been an active and constructive voice in EMMCA — Eastern Market Metro Community Association.

Ivan’s description of what our ANC should be doing is right on point. It’s time for some new faces and fresh ideas on ANC 6B. I wish I lived in Ivan’s district so I could vote for him on November 2!

    Good Luck, Ivan,
    bsr

  2. Pegeen Eslami says:

    Hey Ivan
Good for you. I think your points on neighborhood involvement with development here are right on target. Wish I lived in your area so I could vote for you.

  3. Thank you both very much. I have been out canvassing (some times with daughter Lucy) and the response has been great.

We have a great neighborhood that people love to live in. I really think the more we can open up the process and get people involved in the big decisions like Hine (or the little decisions like how to rehab the call boxe), the better the neighborhood will be for it.

I have a few new posts up on the web site relating to Hine and some of the canvassing I have been doing. Please check them out and sign up for the email list.

    Thanks,

  4. I’ve worked with Ivan as part of his environmental non-profit professional work. I found him to be responsive as well as to be really good at juggling different responsibilities while keeping his sense of humor.

One of Ivan’s best qualities is his ability to quickly see the most efficient way forward, strategically. When we’ve disagreed on strategy, Ivan does it with grace, and is willing to admit that others have better ideas from time to time, too.

Being an elected official requires being responsive, open, and having a sense of humor / priorities – especially at hyperlocal offices like the ANC. If I lived in Capitol Hill / Eastern Market, I’d want Ivan to be my voice at the table – but I’m pretty sure he’d call me up a lot and ask for input and advice, too.

I can’t vote for Ivan, but I would if I could!

  5. Brad Martin says:

    Ivan –
I’m so glad to see you take this on – you’ll be a great addition to the ANC. What I see it in your work everyday at the office – thoughtful, engaging and level headed as you tackle the problems of the day – is what will make you an effective
    ANC member.

And as a caring husband and father you’ll be a powerful voice and advocate for the families of the Hill.

Keep up all the good neighbor-to-neighbor outreach – that’s what we need in campaigns AND the ANC!

    All my best –
    Brad

  6. Janet says:

I agree with the comments above.

Ivan – It’s great to see you running. You’ve been such a great force in the environmental advocacy community, I can only imagine all that you could accomplish right here in our neighborhood. Best of luck to you tomorrow.

  7. Becky Levin says:

I know Ivan as a fellow progressive colleague and parent. He is a tireless advocate and voice of reason on important issues for Hill families and residents spanning sustainable urban development and safe, liveable communities. I strongly encourage folks to vote for Ivan.

  8. Laura Capps says:

I have worked with Ivan and know how professional, committed and effective he is. I admire that he is putting his skills towards improving our neighborhood. I hope you will vote for him.
