Hill Buzz

Since it’s too depressing to think about the Skins game, I’m going back to talking about the weather.  (Hopefully the Caps can bring us some more excitement soon).  We officially tied the record for the most days above 90 degrees!  The current weather is not looking good for actually beating the record (summer of 1980), but with the weather we’ve had the last year, I’m not placing any bets.  I recently said something about how the 17-year cicadas would be the icing on the cake with this year of crazy weather and events.  After seeing a stink bug on my screen door this weekend, I’m worried someone may have misunderstood.  I don’t like bugs, particularly smelly ones. And yet they are invading.  Anyone have a good solution for keeping these things out of my house?   While I let the exterminator take a look, here are some links from the last week.  Happy reading!

  • Miles Glass has finally been purchased!  By by the National Community Church, the group that used to meet in the Union Station movie theaters and now Ebenezer’s. (via JD Land)
  • HStreetDC — my mother, who grew up in New Orleans — was excited to pass along the news that the vacant building next to Taylor Gourmet will become a NOLA-food joint.  The folks from Slice of Life are behind the new restaurant.
  • Washington Post looked at the history of H Street.
  • Norm Metzger provided an update on the Marine’s CIMP plans.  The news everyone seems to care the most about at this stage: the proposed sites.  As Norm summarizes, “Some are apparently off the table (e.g. Square 882, 7th and 8th, M and L, SE), and others face determined opposition, notably any proposal that cut into Virginia Avenue Park including the Community Garden. A representative from the National Park Service noted that NPS would not state its views on the Marines taking part of the Park until NEPA is done. Fine. But the “warning shot” is the possibility of special legislation trumping NPS views. I don’t believe that Virginia Avenue Park is out of the mix.”
  • DC Metrocentric asked how much you think this Hill house with a pool is worth.
  • H Street Great Street reported that Ethiopic and Toyland are adding outdoor seating.
