H Street Festival. This Saturday. Be There.

It’s festival season in DC, and this weekend the H Street Festival is where you need to be.  Yes, the street has been a bit of a messy construction zone the last year but DDOT is working hard to lay down asphalt and pull up jersey walls to have the street open in time for this weekend’s festival, which is expecting to draw crowds larger than last year’s estimated 20,000.  If you didn’t make it last year, make a point to this year — you will be treated to a fantastic mix of everything the street and neighborhood has to offer, from music to fashion, to food, to arts.

Starting Friday, you will see the art cars around the Hill, and there will be an opening reception at Gallery OonH (1354 H Street NE) with food, drinks, live music and  Gallery OonH’s new exhibit “The Way We Move.”

On Saturday there will be a car-avan of Art Cars around Capitol Hill from 9 am until noon, at which point the festival will kick off between 8th and 13th Streets.  Along with a great music lineup on multiple stages, there will be a speed chess challenge, a pie eating contest, the 2nd Annual Skin + Ink Tattoo Competition with H Street’s own Lee Wheeler and Paul Roe from British Ink, and much much more.

I love how no one has yet apologized for scheduling this is on Yom Kippur or even explained why that date was chosen.

  2. Jason says:

Really? How large of a Jewish community do we have in the H Street area? Plenty of events get scheduled on holidays, religious or otherwise.

  3. Morgan says:

hahah apology for scheduling this event on Yom Kippur? FOOL, you crazy. Don’t come, you sound busy.

I’m not an organizer but I do know when they began it they chose the third Saturday of the month as the festival day. It falls between the Adams Morgan and Barracks Row festivals.

But it is unfortuante and some of our arts partners at the Atlas can’t participate because of the holiday. I have already checked and next year the holy days are in October so we will be in the clear.

Oh and the Atlas is holding an Open House during the festival with perormances and workshops both outside and in the theatre. Stop by and check it out!

There may not be a sizable Jewish community around H St., but there IS one in the wider Capitol Hill area, and I think many of us would appreciate it if the High Holy Days were taken into consideration when community events are planned.

To all those affected by the collision of H St Festival with Yom Kippur…….follow your Star Trek logic: The needs of the many, outweigh the needs of the few.
