The growth of new business on  H Street combined local interest from the vendors at Eastern Market to the aspiring fashion folk among us — who collect, knit, knot, consult, style themselves, sew and blog — has resulted in the perfect match: a workshop for those who want to start up a fashion business and want help navigating the legal issues.

Fashionably Business, a small business education program run by the Greater Washington Fashion Chamber of Commerce and its charitable arm, the D.C. Fashion Foundation (DCFF), will be hosting the workshop tonight, Monday, from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm at the offices of H Street Main Street at 961 H St NE.

This program has been going for about two years now and through a partnership with a youth sewing & entrepreneurship program made possible by a Neighborhood Investment Grant. H Street Main Street and Anwar Saleem are the host and partner, respectively.

So, go through a checklist necessary  for a business start up and learn the intricacies if the licensing and registration process for Washington, Maryland and Virginia. Our impeccably attired neighbor and original Hill Mama in Prada, Winnie Yagan will be there. Can anyone say hip little dress boutique on H ST NE?

The presenter, Bisola Daramola, is a recent graduate of New York Law School where she completed internships with Coach Inc. and Christian Louboutin assessing their trademark infringement cases.  She currently works with the Fashion Chamber of Commerce  as a small business coordinator focusing on legal issues. In addition, Bisola works with the Washington Area Lawyers for the Arts as a Fashion Law Subcommittee member where she coordinates and implements workshops and discussions on fashion law issues for the design community.

Fashionably Business is the brainchild of Evelyn Bandoh of  EAB Creative Planning Services, LLC whose role was to develop and execute the program on H Street. From June through this month, Fashionably Business will have hosted about 10 workshops, covering topics such as financial planning, business plan writing, visual merchandising, merchandising basics, strategic marketing and social media and strategic planning for fashion & retail businesses. The culmination of the program is the launch of the first annual “Business Plan Competition.”

The interview process will take place on October 21st/22nd, and the final awards ceremony will take place somewhere along H Street on the morning of Thursday, October 28th during a breakfast ceremony, according to Bandoh.
