National Night Out: Tonight

Tonight is the 27th Annual National Night Out.  Sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch, NNO is a community-level initiative across the US to bring together “citizens, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations and local officials”.  According to the NNO website, their objectives are to:

  • Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness;
  • Generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime programs;
  • Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and
  • Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

Given that our neighborhood has seen more than its fair share of car-jacking, bike thefts, and general rabble rousing, this is a great opportunity to gather together to get to know our neighbors better, as well as meet the law enforcement officers that have been busy on our streets.

There are several NNO events in our area and around the city, so take some time tonight to check out one near you:

7PM at Lincoln Park — this will also serve as the August meeting and potluck dinner for the North Lincoln Park Neighborhood Association.  If you’re a regular attendee, or if you’ve been wondering what they’re all about, stop by the park and bring a covered dish (with serving utensil) or beverage to share.  NLPNA will provide the rest.  See their August newsletter for more details.

Check out Tommy Wells’ blog for more details on these other events in Ward 6:

4:00 – 8:00PM at Landsburg Park — 1000 block of Delaware Avenue, SW, hosted by 1st District MPD.

5:00 – 6:00PM at Marion Park — 500 E St, SE, PSA 105 is hosting an ice cream social and dog treat event with officers.

5:00 – 7:00PM — 1300 E Street, SE, 1D officers in PSA 107 will join PeterBug Matthews and neighbors for food and entertainment.

There’s also a bike ride on the Metropolitan Branch Trail beginning at 7:30PM.
