The To Do List

For the last few days, it’s been all I can do to leave the house.  So kudos to you all who are planning weekend activities; let’s hope we see a repeat of last Saturday’s weather. The summer lull has hit the Hill, but there are still many options out there to take advantage of the variety that is our neighborhood. Exhibits by tattoo artists, gay and children’s film series, community theater, fundraisers for bars and community services organizations and liquor-fueled spelling bees. How’s that for a bit of diversity for a hot, hot weekend?

Thursday

Start things out at the Atlas on Thursday night. As part of their Gay 101 film series, they’re showing Auntie Mame, staring bombshell Rosalind Russell, at 8 p.m. for $6. Perhaps it’s Mame’s “unconventional lifestyle” in the midst of the Depression that makes this a rainbox-flavored fave. If that’s too risque for you, you can catch Charlotte’s Web or Stanno Tutti Bene (Everybody’s Fine) on Saturday.

Chispa (Spanish for spark) at the Fridge may be your cup of tea if you’re in the mood for something arty and intellectual. This multi-media forum at 7 p.m. ($5) is billed as “what artists + organizers + change agents are thinking + dreaming + do.” Whew, that’s a tall order for a Thursday night, but with discussion topics that range from storytelling, art and justice to “get your freak on: how being a weirdo can benefit your organization,” my interest is piqued. While you’re at the Fridge, be sure to check out the exhibit solo exhibition by artist Tattoo Ink that features (surprise) tattoo-themed work including large paintings on canvas, gel medium transfer prints on wood, and prints on paper. Read more about Ms. Ink here.

If you’re feeling spunky, strong and neighborly, the fundraiser “Shake Yer Money Maker for the Argonaut” at the Palace of Wonders is your destination. It’s your chance to arm wrestle a DC Roller Girl, win a raffle prize,  drink up some PBR and shake your booty. The fun starts at 7 p.m. and the $10 cover goes directly to benefit the Argonaut’s post-fire comeback. To make your dollars do a little bit more “good work,” check out the t-shirts, shot glasses and mugs for sale on the the Argonaut’s website.

Friday

If you didn’t make it to H Street on Thursday night, there’s a lot happening Friday evening as well. The top of my list is the Rock & Roll Spelling Buzz. The Rock & Roll Hotel has recently pushed the start time for competitive spellers to 8 p.m. due to local traffic (can you spell congestion?) and 20 lucky participants will get their chance at spellbound fame and a $60 bar tab. Plus $6 gets you a 16oz PBR and a “Shot of crap whiskey” till 10 p.m.

Saturday

It looks like thunderstorms are on the horizon for Saturday; let’s hope they cool things off. Come evening, I plan to venture out and make my way down to the eastern end of Lincoln Park where Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune stands watch over the park’s children.  The 6 p.m. annual birthday celebration for the education activist will feature speakers and performance by a youth choir.

Remember when living in Hill East was considered living on the ‘fringe.’ Well, we’ve arrived because the Fringe Festival has come to Capitol Hill. At 7:30 p.m. the Stagepaint Actor’s Workshop presents the play Hotel Cassiopeia for $15 at the Corner Store. This play shows us what happens if one’s innermost fantasies come true and introduces theater-goers to a Che Guevara wannabe, a Cosmo fanatic, and other quirky characters as they explore the age-old question: what if we got everything we ever wanted.

Next Tuesday:

We don’t typically help you make plans for the early part of the week, but next Tuesday, July 13, is the Capitol Hill Group Ministry’s 2nd Annual All-Star Party Night.  This organization served over 3,000 local homeless and low income households last year, AND they’re offering a chance to see behind-the-scenes at the stadium, so we’re breaking all the rules. The Nats will be playing at the All-Star game so you can take a swing at batting practice, see if you have Strasburg-like speed in the bullpen, tour the locker room and more. There will be food and drink in the Diamond Club and the All-Star game on the jumbotron. Tickets are $55 each, with a special rate of $15 for children under 12. Buy your tickets here.
