Monday Morning Circle Time

Nothing like the rainy Monday morning after a spectacular spring weekend! Sigh…But let’s extend that blissed out state just a moment longer as we find out how THIH writers spent these two mostly gorgeous days.

Did anyone run in the Capitol Hill Classic?

Tim: Went camping with the family. You can lead a two year old to a
sleeping bag, but you can’t make them sleep.

Kyra: This weekend my daughter and I watched as my husband and my father cut down a large dead tree in our backyard. It was the first step in making our own green space–just in time to share it with the mosquitoes.

Robert: Went to various yard sales on Saturday, followed by a birthday dinner at Belga. Sunday was shopping and a performance at the Kennedy Center.

Jon: We spent Saturday morning at Watkins Mill Park in Upper Marlboro, MD, feeding chickens and peacocks and giving our daughter her first pony ride, followed by a fun and tasty lunch at Capital City Diner on Bladensburg Road (GO and get a waffle!).  The rest of the weekend was spent doing some yardwork and a fun family barbecue on Sunday.

Sharee: We made a bee line for lunch at Ted’s Bulletin Saturday (Campfire turkey burger for me, though the sloppy joe is still my favorite so far). We checked out some of the open houses on Sunday and wrapped up the weekend with Hamlet at the Folger – the lead actor was fantastic! See this one before it closes.

Maria: We went to martial arts class, celebrated a birthday at Belga (mmm!), and got a new doormat at Homebody.

Tory: Hubby and I took apart an old factory cart we found on Craigslist and sanded, painted and polyurethaned it à la Restoration Hardware. (This project included multiple trips to Fragers.) While we were waiting for the paint and polyurethane to dry, we took the dogs to the park and then had a beer and some wings on the rooftop deck of Jordan’s 8. Weekends like this are exactly why we moved to Capitol Hill.

Liz: I only have five boxes left to unpack and saw 20% of the contents of my former house laid out on the grass for the Saturday  NLP yardsale.  Watched a thunderstorm on the porch later that day with great new neighbors.

Nichole: Mulched my tiny garden and had many beers on my patio with friends, canine and human, both new and old!

Kate: Saturday: Spent the afternoon at College Park Ikea trying to figure out how to squeeze the most storage room out of our Hill East row house, followed by the first BBQ ribs and some blessed mosquito-free time in the back yard. As a first time Capitol Hill Classic participant on sunday I had a ball with and did pretty well timing wise considering the extra passenger. I’ve never been so happy to see Stanton Park!

Claudia: I took advantage of an afternoon off from work to finally try the famous G Man at Mangialardos and Sons.  I really wish they’d find a way to open on the weekends…

and Me…it was a frustrating weekend, consisting mostly of responsible adult activities like transporting children to their sporting activities and watching them play. We spent most of yesterday tearing a mountain of ivy (which we insanely planted several years ago) off of our neighbor’s wall which borders our backyard.  Sunday morning was spent e-grumbling about the annoying Annys Shin story in the Post with fellow THIH writers. The highlight was watching the premiere of our 48 Hour film festival movie, Kings of Pong although I can now confirm that the camera does indeed add ten pounds.

So only Kate ran in the Classic? What about you dear readers? How did it go?

Ate a fantastic pastrami sandwich with a glass of cider at the Star and Shamrock Friday night, then met a friend for coffee at Sidamo Saturday morning. I’m no runner, but I took pictures of my husband running the Classic. Turns out I’m not much of a photographer either, but it was a lot of fun out there!

Oh yeah we DeMayo’s just don’t run. I think there is more hope for us as photographers. Glad you had a great weekend Katherine!

The Hill looked great along the route of the race. And out of courtesy to my neighbors, I suppressed my urge to vomit throughout the entire 6.3 miles. I also passed the time by counting the police officers blocking the streets and wondered about what kinds of hissy fits they were enduring from unsuspecting motorists. As one of those really slow runners way in the back, I thank everyone for sticking around long enough to cheer us on.

The highlight of the day, for me, was watching the scores of Hill kids zoom through the 3K race. Big shout out to Mia, the Hill 9-year-old who beat me and several hundred other women (including her mom) in the 10K.

Didn’t run, but bobbed along in the 3K w/ my 6 y/o son and 7 y/o niece. So proud of them for making it!

The community feel of the Classic is amazing. Embarrassed to admit it’s my first time participating in the time I’ve lived here, but it certainly won’t be my last! Kudos to the organizers and volunteers!

  5. Jen says:

Oh I wonder if I know the Mia you speak of…I know a 9 year old Hill based Mia and she’s a great runner!

  6. Jill says:

Yes, Jen – the same Mia!
