Take Your Pick: Two Community Policing Opportunities Tonight

Uploaded to flickr by Mosieur J.

Ah, springtime on Capitol Hill. Last year it was marked by a rise in muggings near the metro stations and the thieves’ appetite for all things Apple. This year, there’s talk of concern about faux charity fundraisers, the “mob” groups near the metro and listserv reminders to neighbors to stay aware of their surroundings. Today is your day to get active in neighborhood policing and raise your awareness about the work MPD is doing on Capitol Hill.

The Hill East Orange Hat Group meets tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the corner of 13th and E Streets Northeast. This group checks up on problem areas, walks through alleys identifying risks (and later alerting homeowners) and makes a point to meet and get to know neighbors. They welcome kids and pets on  their walk as they patrol the northwest area of PSA 103.

Tonight is also the meeting of the 1D First District Citizens’ Advisory Committee. The meeting is at 7 p.m. at the 1D Station located at 101 M Street SW. At the top on the agenda is a presentation by Lt. William Farr of the MPD Car Jacking Task Force, followed by brief presentations from representatives of the DC Rape Crisis Center and the 1D Community Outreach & Youth Initiative. As always, Commander David Kamperin will present the monthly crime stats and take questions from those in attendance. Officer Justin Phillips will be awarded the Cops Cop of the Month Award for his role leading investigative work that resulted in the seizure of handguns, drugs and currency from 1332 Corbin Place NE.
