Lincoln Park to go to the Dogs

The National Park Service announced today that it will immediately begin the process to convert Lincoln Park to what will become the District’s largest dog park. The process will begin with the removal of all playground equipment. The conversion should be complete in time for Memorial Day.

“At the end of the day, it just made sense to officially convert the park,” said NPS spokesperson Calvin Broadus.  “In the words of President Lincoln himself, it’s ‘Better to give your path to a dog than be bitten by him in contesting for the right.’ With that in mind, we could think of no better way to honor the former President and dog-lover, than to convert Lincoln Park into the District of Columbia’s largest dog park.”

Because the park is on Federal rather than city-owned land, this process is a much speedier one than for other dog parks in the District.

This is happy news for the many Hill pooches who have to jockey for priority with Hill humans at neighborhood parks. The new park will feature state-of-the-art canine amenities including artificial turf, a heated dogs-only swimming pool, and a full set of agility equipment, in addition to water fountains and treat dispensers. NPS will also fence in the park to ensure that the Hill’s pooches can run to their hearts content but not escape into the street and harms way.

In addition, the Park Service has commissioned a statue of President Lincoln’s dog Fido. The statue will welcome Capitol Hill’s canines at the 11th Street entrance to their new park.

According to Broadus, “President Lincoln was an animal lover who kept dogs, cats, turkeys, goats and rabbits. It is our hope that by converting his namesake park to a dog park that we are honoring his legacy and that of his beloved canine companion Fido.”

In other late-breaking news, to honor the other pets of Abraham Lincoln, the Lincoln Memorial will be closed to humans and open only to cats, turkeys, goats, and rabbits.

Funny. I call Marion Park at 6th and SC “Dog Sh*t” park. Dogs have completely taken over. Last time I was at Garfield Park a german shepherd not on a leash ran up to me. As it approached, I had to think whether I was going to kick it in the face or let it approach and hope that it wasn’t going to bite. I did the latter and it jumped up, knocking me backwards and staining my pants.

You might laugh that off. Ha ha, oh just get over it. It’s just a little stain on your pants.

Next time I’m kicking the beast.
