Feed Your Inner Serena … or Rafa

Still looking for the perfect sport this spring? Dust off your racquet and warm up that serve because Tennis on the Hill begins play this Sunday, April 25th.  Using courts at Anacostia Park for instruction, plus those at Garfield Park, Payne Elementary, Randal Park and Sherwood Rec Center for adult play, TotH offers adult and junior instruction (starting as young as age 4, though the 4-5 and 6-8 classes are already sold out). They also offer an adult ladder, which matches players with similar skill levels.

A piece of advice:  if you’re considering this, don’t dawdle.  Though the Australian Open has already passed us by, the French Open is just around the corner (May 23rd, to be exact). You’ll watch a little of the action and wonder what it’s like to play on a clay court.  Then before you know it, it’s the end of June and Wimbledon is here.  You’ll be feeling all Anglophile and surfing online for white Lacoste gear.  If you haven’t already thoroughly caught the tennis bug, you will when the Washington Kastles play in July.  At this point, you’ll be wondering how long it might take before you can hit a 100mph serve (the record, by the way, is 155mph by Andy Roddick).  Then it’s the end of August and you’re on the train up to NYC for the US Open.  After mingling with celebrities and the sports elite for a few days (I saw Mayor Fenty there a couple of years ago – I’ll let you decide if he fits into either of the aforementioned categories) you will be so tennis crazy you’ll be ready to raze your entire backyard, such as it is, to make way for a hard surface and a backboard.

In short, go ahead and give in now.  You’ll be seeing a lot of great professional tennis over the next several months.  Start preparing with TotH so you can bring some of those moves you see from Roland Garros to Garfield Park. Class descriptions can be found here for juniors, adults and the ladder.  You can sign up here, and get the latest news from the TotH Facebook page.
