This is the third in a series of guest posts by Sandra Moscoso, featuring a few of Capitol Hill’s sheroes — remarkable women — in honor of Women’s History Month. Today’s post features Heather Schoell. Previous posts featured Laurie Siegel and Barbara Percival.
Heather Schoell – Japanese linguist, journalist, everywoman… Everywoman, because Heather is everyWHERE. As Maury Elementary’s PTA Vice President, she helped develop the Maury-CHAMPS Power Hour (where she tutors students twice a week), and organized a DCPS volunteer registration for the community. Not content with resting on her laurels, Heather looks beyond her children’s school and participates in several community/DCPS efforts aimed at improving the quality of ALL public schools in Capitol Hill. Heather left a full-time job in 2002 and intended to “get involved” as much as possible. Ever the overachiever, Heather serves as Secretary of the North Lincoln Park Neighborhood Association and writes for the Hill Rag. She views the variety of opportunities to volunteer as a luxury and feels “fortunate to spend so much time” on community efforts. Who are Heather’s Sheroes? Elizabeth Nelson, fellow Maury volunteer, VanNessa Duckett-Thomas, “preschool teacher, child-whisperer, manager of people” and Mary Rieger, “who has changed my life with acupuncture.”
