DC is so hypocritical! Wants to raise taxes on slumlords, but it is in fact the biggest slumlord of all…still has vacant school buildings all over: Old Miner school on 15th and G NE; the Franklin School at 13th and K, and another on 10th and H NW; then yet another on Mass and H NE….etc. All have been sitting vacant for years…all prime real estate…. ridiculous!!

Congrats and thanks for posting this, but you might want to update in light of the change in the law regarding vacant properties that took efffect in October 2009. http://dcra.dc.gov/dcra/cwp/view,a,1343,q,625194,dcraNav,%7C33408%7C.asp
Under current law, vacants aren’t taxed higher, only the small subset of them that are deemed “blighted.” Doesn’t sound so bad, but in practive only 7 of 340 vacants in Ward 6 are deemed “blighted” so 333 owners of mostly crummy problematic properties are getting off scott-free right now. Council is talking about fixing this, so hopefully they’ll do so soon because a lot of those vacant, but not deemed “blighted” properties need some incentives to get put back into productive use.

There’s a boarded up house on the west side of 500 block of 3rd St. NE. A sign on the door warns that there’s no floor on the other side of the door. So obviously the house is in shambles. Its never been occupied to my knowledge in the past decade. It was boarded by the city a few years ago. For now, it mostly just collects Examiners.

congratulations to the people on that block! nothing makes me happier than seeing wonderful old homes brought back to life with actual people in them!

The slumlord in my area is DC. DC owns three vacant houses on three different blocks near my home. The one on my block has been for sale for over three years. You’d think that someone would notice that it’s way overpriced for a house that needs a total renovation.
