Yes, it’s going to snow again, so at least you know part of your weekend is going to involve some amount of icy maintenance and/or stepping in frozen poop, leading to hours of wondering where that smell is coming from.
Let’s find you more pleasant things to do this weekend, shall we?
Need something nice to warm you up with all this new snow, or perhaps a beer to spill some tears into? Stop by SOVA between 5 and 7:30 pm, Tuesday through Friday, for half off beer and wine, and cheer up: there is a reason they call it “Happy Hour.”
On Friday, February 26, plan to attend a special performance at the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop by soprano Nancy Almquist and pianist Jeffery Watson. The concert features classical and jazz pieces such as“Quatre chansons de jeunesse” by Claude Debussy, “Cantata” by John Carter, and favorites such as “Over the Rainbow,” and “Stardust.” Almquist and Watson have already presented this program in Chicago and will travel to Paris in March 2010 for another presentation. Tickets are $15 and CHAW recommends you purchase in advance, either by calling 202-547-6839 or emailing victor@chaw.org. The Capitol Hill Arts Workshop is at 545 7th street, SE.
Wake up on Saturday the 27th and what do you feel like doing? Well, INTERSECTIONS is going strong at the Atlas Performing Arts Center. For instance, Kathleen Gonzales‘s wonderfully moving one-woman show and tribute to being Haitian-American– which is a fundraiser, by the way– is taking place on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 7:30 pm, with a Sunday 4:30 pm matinee. Plus with Speakeasy DC‘s “Wetbacks, Aliens and Towelheads”, there is something in their lineup sure to grab your attention. In fact, they have so many great performances featured for all ages, I’m just going to ask you to stop by their site: http://intersectionsdc.org/ and download the performance schedule (and tack it to your fridge, since INTERSECTIONS runs through March 5th!). At H Street County Club, starting at 5 pm, if you bring a new, unused children’s book or donate $10, you will get a free drink ticket and the chance to meet local school administrators and sign up to volunteer for your school. Proceeds for the night go to the DC Education Fund.
It’s Sunday: do you have an inner drummer waiting to come out? Then swing by (where else?) INTERSECTIONS at the Atlas Performing Arts Center at 5:30 pm, where Tom Teasley will be conducting a percussion workshop for ages ten and up that will awaken your senses and whet your appetite for more world rhythm. You can purchase tickets following this link, or you can go to the INTERSECTIONS site for more info.
And finally, what about toasting the month that was with a discounted bottle of wine at Zest American Bistro? Sunday through Thursday, from 9 pm to close, all bottles of wine are 25% off. Not a bad way to bid farewell to February!
