I have to give a shout out to the huge number of local businesses that stayed open during the storm to save us from cabin fever.  If you were following us on Twitter (@thehillishome), you know just how many places were open and what a testament that is to how great local businesses are.   Knowing that many of my friends outside of the city were without power and live long walks from stores and restaurants, I’m more grateful than ever to be in a neighborhood where I can walk to everything I need.  So THIH is sending out a huge thanks to the staff that braved the weather to keep us all well fed, stocked with household necessities, and full of our favorite beverages during the latest snow storm.  But now I hear we’re getting another 10-20 inches?! Who crossed Mother Nature and is refusing to apologize? I love snow as much as the next kid but another 10 inches on top of this is more than I can handle.

And now on to an important message before your weekly Hill Buzz links: shovel your sidewalk!  According to DC law, you are responsible for the entire stretch of sidewalk in front of your property.  It’s the law people, not to mention it’s just basic common courtesy to your neighbors to make the sidewalk safe for walking.  Don’t care about your neighbors? Then how about the mailman who brings you your mail?  With another ten inches on the way, it’s only going to get harder.  I have been contemplating posting pictures of “walks of shame” so don’t say I didn’t warn you if your walk happens to end up featured here on THIH.  City Paper set the bar pretty high though, featuring the sidewalks of our city officials.  Hill resident Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton earned an A-.  I haven’t seen Tommy Wells’s side walk, but I’m guessing that the king of the “livable walkable community” shoveled his walk.

Okay, enough shoveling talk. Your weekly Hill Buzz is waiting for you after the jump.

Anyone have a suggestion for sidewalk shoveling for someone who is out of DC right now? Since everyone is digging out I’d like to hire someone to do this rather than beg a neighbor who spent all weekend shoveling their own house.

I feel for you on this, Kate, and will say I am a bit more forgiving of those houses where it’s clear that no one has been home since the start of the storm. My best suggestion would be to offer your neighbors money and a home cooked dinner when you return in exchange for helping you out. Hopefully some of our other readers will have some better advice. I imagine that there are a lot of neighborhood kids looking to make some cash in exchange for shoveling.

If you do start the “walks of shame”, check out the house at the SW corner of Elliot and F NE. This person shoveled their driveway, but hasn’t touched the sidewalk.

hahaha now that is exactly what I am talking about. Please email me a picture if you can!

And then there is the house on the corner of Independence and Kentucky, south side– they never shovel at all. Ever.

The Mardi Gras event had to be put off due to the snow storm. H Street businesses are restocking today and will be open for business, but no second city this Sunday.

Thanks for the update about Mardi Gras. What a shame to have to cancel, but considering the clean up that is still going on from this storm, I’m not too surprised. Arlington canceled their Mardi Gras celebration too.
