Local Filmmaker Michael Skinner in Sudan

Local filmmaker Michael Skinner, founder of the Hill’s Pendragwn Productions, has embarked on his most ambitious project to date. He and his very small crew are currently in the Sudan shooting a documentary titled We Are the Ones.

The film will focus on a group of former Sudanese Lost Boys who have decided to return to their country as adults. These young men are now medical professionals and are attempting to bring much-needed care to the country.

The filmmakers spent some time in the small village of Old Fangok where doctors have been treating an epidemic of an illness called Kala Azar which translates to “black urine.” Without treatment the illness has a 90% death rate, but with medical intervention only 5% of the local population has died.

Michael, a father of two boys, is a local actor in addition to being a filmmaker.  When not busy with work he is a tireless volunteer for his son’s school, Two Rivers Public Charter School and a devoted soccer and T-ball coach for Sports on the Hill. If you have ever watched a T-ball game I’m sure you understand the level of patience and humor this must require.

Communication from the Sudan has been sporadic. The crew should return in early February and will undoubtedly have much to share.   They have been blogging about their experiences. You can keep up with them here.

THIH will be sure to check in with Michael and his crew when they return.
