It’s a week before Christmas, the end of Hanukkah and dear Goddess what have you got planned for the solstice??
Well time is a wastin’ and should you be in need of further distraction from your enormous to do list, THIH is here to oblige.
Starting tonight:
A German Christmas
Folger Shakespeare Library
December 17 – December 20, 7:30 pm
And really isn’t an American Christmas basically a German Christmas with some Victorian panache thrown in?
The Folger Consort has been observing the musical offerings of the Teutons with A German Christmas.
The Cantate Chamber Singers perform with an ensemble of brass, wind, strings, and organ.
The Consort celebrates the holidays in the Elizabethan Theatre with the festive music of Michael Praetorius, the most prolific German composer of the early 17th century. The Consort performs some of the great Christmas favorites from this collection, including In Dulci Jubilo, Es ist ein Rose, and Puer Natus Est.
If you are going to the concert on Friday night consider checking out the Folger Fridays lecture at 6:30. Steven Galbraith, Folger’s Curator of Books, will discuss highlights from the music holdings of the Folger collection prior to the Folger Consort’s 8pm performance of In Dulci Jubilo: A German Christmas.
Friday is also the last night of Hannukah. Celebrate with members of the Hill Havurah. There will be music, latkes, challah, games, falafel, chocolate and a reading of The Flying Latke. There will also be a brief service. Kids activities begin at 5:30 and there will be a mass menorah lighting at 6:30. Please BYOM (bring your own menorah) to contribute to the glorious full blazing lights effect. The party is happening at 801 North Carolina Ave SE.
Did you miss Santa on Barrack’s Row? Fear not, he likes the Hill so much, and who could blame him really, he is coming back to spend time at Fragers the weekend. He will be seeing visitors and taking orders Saturday and Sunday from 10 am until 3 pm. According to the Frager’s Twitter feed (did I just write that?) there will be cider and giveaways. MotoPhoto will be taking complimentary photos but hear this, Santa is at Fragers for Yuletide purposes only! Asking Santa to find you that little thingymajig you need to fix that broken whatchmacallit in the basement is discouraged.
Serenity Now!
Serenity Workshop at Capitol Hill Yoga
Saturday, December 19 from 3:00 – 5:00 pm
Teacher Elizabeth Goodman leads a two hour combination of restorative postures in the Anusara tradition. The workshop is open to both new and experienced yogis. Breath in and breathe out and let go of the cookie madness. Namaste!
Don’t let all that yummy post-yoga bliss go to waste. Head over to the Corner Store give your ears the gift of melody. The Winter Light-A-Solstice Celebration is an evening of traditional carols and Celtic tunes performed by the Ocean Quartet on Saturday the 19th and and Sunday the 20th. Four accomplished female musicians combine forces in this one act so traditional music fans are in for a treat. Father Christmas plans on stopping for a visit. Apparently this pre-Coca Cola incarnation didn’t bring gifts so don’t get your hopes up.
Hmm, 11 pm on a Sunday and you have nothing to do? Well my friends now there is no excuse to wallow in your Monday-dread. Sticky Rice, not afraid of late-night events like, such as the super fun but waaay-too-late-on-a-Tuesday-for- me Karaoke, has you covered with Piko, the Sticky Rice version of Trivia Night. The fun starts at 11 pm every Sunday.
Well they say they start at 11. I guess I’ll just have to take them at their word because I’ll be snug in my bed at that hour. If you go report back!
