It’s entirely possible that the rain we’re getting may continue through the weekend, but let’s be optimistic. You can take your pick of cultural, food, or shopping focused outings to get out the house and sample the array of activities in the neighborhood. Many of these options are even worth picking up the drippy umbrella and heading out.
If the rain stops, the Navy Yard would be place to be on Friday night. Those gates on M Street are imposing, but Navy Museum visitors will have a chance to take a tour of the property by candlelight. I know children who are still getting over Ghost Ship fright, so seeing the place by night sounds like a quite an experience. Be sure to RSVP by calling 202-433-6826. If you’d prefer to stay warm and toasty, a concert at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church on at 3rd & A Streets, SE might be a great end-of-week wind down. The chorale concert, conducted by Jeffery Workman, begins at 8 p.m. and will feature the premiere of a piece by noted composer David Hurd. Check out what else is going on after the jump…
On Saturday, you can easily spend your afternoon near 8th Street, starting off with a cooking class at Hill’s Kitchen that has my mouth watering as I’m reading about it. What’s better than bacon? Bacon AND pancetta! In this two hour demonstration class Curing Meats: Bacon and Pancetta, students will cover the science behind curing, discuss food safety issues, learn about suppliers and sources, and finish up tasting some cured meats prepared by the instructor. The class is from 3 to 5 p.m. For more information and to register, see the Hill’s Kitchen website.
Then it’s time to head down 8th Street for Second Saturday events. Between yappy hour with free treats for pups as well as their owners and a presentation at 7 p.m. by Bonny King-Taylor, aka the Doggy Lama, a stop by Chateau Animaux is a must. Then check out the sales at Sweet Magnolia and open houses at Groovy dc and Homebody. To celebrate their fourth anniversary Homebody is throwing a party complete with a DJ and champagne. I might go just to see the disco lights bouncing off their fabulous furniture collection. For musical, eating and relaxing experiences, follow me over the jump.
Make sure to wrap up the shopping by 7ish. You can just make it to the Library of Congress for a concert of Persian music by Kayhan Kalhor and Brooklyn Rider. The concert features original music by the renowned kamancheh (spike fiddle) player/composer and an adventurous young quartet, collaborators in Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Project. The details are here.
If you want to keep the 8th Street love buzz going on Sunday, catch up with the Smithsonian Associates, who have started a new neighborhood history tour that also highlights eateries along Barracks Row. If you take the tour this week, you’ll be filling your plate at Capitol Hill Tandoor & Grill, Matchbox and Cafe 8. You know where to go for the 911!
If you’re a parent, there’s a workshop on Sunday at Capitol Hill Yoga that will having you and your wee ones doing child’s pose and perhaps even energetic downward dogs. Each second Sunday of month Jennifer Mueller will teach three Itsy Bitsy Yoga workshops. The 2 pm class is for babies, the 3 pm is designed for tykes, and 4 pm is for tots. Itsy Bitsy Yoga was developed by Helen Garabedian, an early childhood yoga and developmental movement specialist, certified yoga teacher and author.
Enjoy your weekend!
