Drinking Your Thanksgiving on the Hill

Thanksgiving in DC is one of my favorite things in the world.  More so than any other holiday, it feels like the city really empties out leaving a skeleton crew of locals, barflies and people who are smart enough to realize that nothing ruins a holiday faster than time spent on I-95.  Wander into a bar on Thanksgiving weekend and the feeling among you and your fellow patrons is almost conspiratorial.  These people – even if you never say a word to them – become your family for a couple of hours, and part of your holiday memory bank.

A couple of blogs (We Love DC and Brightest Young Things) have drawn up some pretty excellent lists of where to eat on Thanksgiving if you’re not doing the whole shebang at home.  I’m more interested in where I can grab a bourbon, that most American of brown liquors, and sit quietly with strangers also looking to avoid the Thanksgiving hubbub.  Fellow THIHer Claudia was a big help in getting together this list of places to imbibe on Thanksgiving Day on the Hill.

Oh, and since Thanksgiving also happens to be my birthday, if you see me around any of the neighborhood watering holes -why yes, you can buy me a drink.  The list, after the jump…

On H Street NE, your options are:

The Argonaut is open, but they won’t be serving food, and will only have one bartender on duty.  However, you are more than welcome to bring your own Leftover Sandwich (or any other eats) down to the bar for a drink.

The Pug will be open and will be facilitating your getting good and hammered with $2 shots of Wild Turkey.

At 9:30 head over to Palace of Wonders for a Grindhouse double feature and specials on PBR and Wild Turkey all night.

Eastern Market favorite Tunnicliff’s is the place to go to catch all of the games on Thursday afternoon starting with the Packers v. the Lions at 12:30 PM.  Stay all afternoon for the Raiders v. the Cowboys at 4:15, and since you’re already there, stick around for the late game which features the Giants v. the Broncos at 8:20.

If you’re headed to Barracks Row some choices are:

Lola’s will be open (but Molly Malone’s will not).

The Ugly Mug opens up at 4pm for “Post Turkey Drinks.”

Pennsylvania Avenue SE is shaping up to be your best bet if you want food with your drinks (although all three levels of the Pour House, 18th Amendment, Capitol Lounge, Sonoma, Trusty’s and Little Pub are all closed):

The Hawk ‘n’ Dove will be open!  Dinner starts at 2pm, but they’ll be open from 10 am (or so) so you can grab a drink before heading over to your parents’ or in-laws’!

The Tune Inn will also be open for their regular business hours and serving Thanksgiving dinner in addition to their full menu (and of course cocktails!)

I was told that La Plaza is “Open everyday. We don’t close.”

Any spots we missed?  Please add them in the comments.  Gobble gobble!
