Sing Along with Boogie Babes

It’s an unusually warm Monday morning in November. Umbrella strollers and double joggers are lined up outside of SOVA Espresso & Wine. Inside, Mr. Skip, a cross between your favorite English teacher and Jimmy Buffet, entertains an audience of infants, toddlers and grown-ups on the second floor of the H Street coffee house. The event is just one in a series of family-friendly musical performances brought to the Hill by Boogie Babes.

Boogie Babes, founded by two Hill moms tired of driving to Virginia every time they wanted to do something fun with their kids, offers children and adults the chance to mix, mingle, dance and drink—from morning music with the likes of Oh Susannah and Mr. Skip to after work happy hours and Brunch on Sundays.

Founders and friends Amanda Clarke and Kara Morrissey started Boogie Babes out of necessity. “As a busy mom of two very active boys,” said Clarke, “I was constantly searching for quality, age-appropriate outings for my kids that I’d actually enjoy. I was always driving off of the Hill, and that just didn’t seem right considering how many young families live on the Hill.”

In 2008, the pair started calling local children’s artists to see if they would be interested in performing for audiences here on the Hill. “We searched around to find the best children’s musicians in the DC area,” said Morrissey, a former music teacher, a singer with The Washington Chorus and a mom of three. Clarke and Morrissey then approached the owners of SOVA, who “generously agreed” to allow Boogie Babes to use their space free of charge.

“We booked our first event, told all of our friends and sent out the word on the Moms on the Hill listserv,” said Clarke. The popularity of that first event exceeded the pair’s expectations, so they decided to keep going. “We started a blog and a website to keep all of our friends in the know, and now we have a very loyal following of moms, dads, grandparents, nannies and kids.”

Boogie Babes hosts morning music events at SOVA with artists such as Oh Susannah, Mr. Don, Mr. Skip and Groovy Nate, and is looking to add a second location for events in Southeast. For working moms and dads looking to join the fun, Boogie Babes also features happy hour events at a variety of locations on the Hill.
