It’s a three-day weekend ahead for many of us and how will we fill our time?? If you are not leaving town for leaf-peeping here are some ideas…
H Street is where it’s at for folks with kids on Saturday:
You have the monthly Baby Loves Disco from 1pm – 4pm at the Rock and Roll Hotel.
The H Street Farmer’s Market (625 H Street NE, 9am – 12pm) hosts the Green Kids at the Market event courtesy of Les Dames d’Escoffier. Aren’t currently a member of the stroller set? Well, don’t let that stop you from checking out the Market because Divine Chocolate, a fair-trade chocolate company, will also be there.
The Kennedy Center’s Theater for Young Audiences on Tour stops briefly at the Atlas Performing Arts Center before heading out on a 5 month national tour. Chasing George Washington is an original musical by local playwright Karen Zacharias about three kids, Dee, José, and Annie, who accidentally knock George Washington out of his portrait and into real life —turning their White House tour into an unexpected adventure. And in a truly wacky “only in Washington” turn of events, Dee is played by local actress Mary Milben, who was an intern and later an appointee in the George W. Bush White House. Performances are Friday October 9th at 11 am and 7:30 pm; Saturday October 10th at 11 am and 1pm Tickets are $20 for Adults and $15 for Children. Call the Box Office at 202.399.7993 or at www.atlasarts.org
The National Equality March is this weekend with events all over town. On the Hill, Potomac Fever of the Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington will be singing Saturday October 10th at 2 pm at a Memorial Service at Congressional Cemetery which honors gay veterans, in particular, Leonard Matlovich the first active soldier to challenge the military’s ban on gays.
Get Ready for Halloween!
Okay so not technically ON the Hill but certainly Hill-ish in spirit, the Shakespeare Theatre is holding a The Ultimate Costume Sale Sunday, October 11th from 1-6 pm at Harman Hall (610 F Street NW), their swanky new digs in Chinatown. If you happen to be a member you get a 10% discount on some truly unique costumes, including the costumes of the hippie flower children from Love’s Labour’s Lost or maybe Titus Andronicus’ blood-soaked duds.
Should you score Titus’ robes you may then be in the mood for Titus Andronicus at the Rock and Roll Hotel Sunday night. An indie band straight outta Glen Rock, New Jersey who sound like a mash up of Green Day with a splash of Johnny Rotten.
And finally an event near to the hearts of THIH folks…
To celebrate 60 years of providing wine buying guidance to generations of Hill residents, Schneiders is holding a Warehouse Sale, Tasting and Party Saturday October 10 11am-6pm. Most wines will be sold just by the case, some for as low at $12. The sale will be held not at their Hill store but at the 15,000 square foot warehouse at 1840 Fenwick Street NE, just off of new York Avenue.
