Three Knifepoint Robberies on the Hill in Less Than a Week

The Hill is Home is monitoring reports of incidents involving muggings at knifepoint in recent days. Last Friday two individuals were robbed together by a group of two to three males believed to be 20 and under at 10th and D NE. The incident happened in broad daylight, according to alerts and MPD-1D listserv information from officers. And at a little past noon today, Wednesday,  two juveniles allegedly robbed someone in the 700 block of 13th Street SE. Questions are pending, of course, and First District detectives are investigating. Apparently, there were several witnesses to the Friday knife muggings. If anyone has additional information, the please call MPD at 202-299-2025.

Additionally, the Hill is experiencing an upward trend in burglaries, according to a listserv email from Commander David Kamperin of the First District.

“Although we are experiencing this trend I want to let the community know that we have deployed additional resources to the area to address this. Over the past 60 days we have made 16 arrests for these offenses,” he stated in a listserv email. “Of course, by making an arrest that means that we have had a victim of a crime. Hopefully, this email will educate and not alarm you regarding these incidents and steps you can take to prevent being a victim of a crime. As we put extra resources in the community, there are several things you can do as well to prevent burglaries,” he wrote:
To wit, he states:

  1. Lock your doors and windows (several burglaries on the Hill have been through unsecured doors/windows)
  2. Keep you windows clear of high bushes that could enable someone to hide behind- take an inventory of the exterior of your home. Are there places where someone could hide or things (such as ladders, chairs) left out that could be used to gain entry in upper levels?
  3. Other options include installing an alarm (make sure you use a bonded/insured and reputable contractor), leave a radio or TV on when you leave so that is sounds as if someone is inside.
