Seventh Hill Open on Tuesday

On Friday night I stopped by Montmartre and was told that their new pizza shop, Seventh Hill will be opening tomorrow.  The new eatery will be in the space previously occupied by Ben and Jerry’s.

While I’m sad to have lost our ice cream shop, I think that gourmet pizza is something we can use more of on the Hill.  I, personally, don’t love Matchbox or Ugly Mug pizza and usually venture to NW to satisfy my cravings.  So the prospect of a new place close to home has me pretty excited.

I got a hold of a menu which includes soup, paninis, and 11 pizzas named after various Capitol Hill locations.  Prices for the pizzas range from $9.95-10.95 for am 8″ and $15.95-16.95 for a 12″. Picking which one to try first will be the biggest challenge for me.  I don’t have any confirmation on whether or not they will be open for lunch, but stop by if you are around just in case and let us know what you think of the newest addition to the Hill restaurant scene!

Check out the jump for the pizza list!

I’m so excited that most of the pizzas are vegetarian! Despite living a few blocks away, I rarely eat at Montmartre because their French menu is so meat-heavy — very excited about this new development! 🙂

Stopped by this afternoon and was given a piece of pizza to taste. Wonderful! Truly delicious combinations. Hope they do very well.

A friend said she went by and they still weren’t open…already dreaming of a Sunday supper! I think she said they’re hoping for a Friday opening.

    Better than 2Amy’s?

Does anyone know if they’re open? I just called and there was no answer…am hoping to go there after work on Friday.

i would say comparable to 2amys. the pizza is neopolitan style, so very thin crust. much different than al’s or new york pizza on the hill. i tried it on 9/1. it is very good. and the pizza maker is trained in the neopolitan style.

  10. They were supposed to open officially last week so I suspect the current delay involves waiting for one last permit from the city. Hopefully they’ll be open for dinner by Friday!

I just stopped by Montmarte to see when they expected to open. The gentleman I spoke to said they were still waiting for their final inspection from the city. The inspector was supposed to show up today, but as of 1:00 had not. I love living in the District, but hate the District gov’t when I hear things like this.

  12. Thanks for the update! I couldn’t agree more about the DC gov’t with situations like this – I seem to hear that same story far too often. Hopefully they will get their last permit soon!

My favorite pizza spot is 2Amy’s in NW. How does this place compare?

  14. 2Amy’s is really hard to beat, and is probably my favorite in the city. 7th Hill is my favorite on the Hill though. So I’m comparing it more to Matchbox, Ugly Mug, and Cafe 8.

It has its drawbacks – the menu is limited (and unlikely to expand too much since they have such a small kitchen), and the indoor seating is very cramped and limited, so it’s best for carry-out. But I really do think that their pizza is excellent, and while others will disagree with me, I think it’s better than Matchbox.

I was so excited to hear of this new pizza place and ordered a pizza for carry out tonight. Ironically, I heard about this place from a Matchbox employee (don’t worry, Matchbox, you should not consider Seventh Hill competition). I was immediately disappointed when I opened the box to find basically a cracker with tomato paste on it and very little toppings. The sausage was tasty, but not every slice had a piece on it. Most bites consisted of just dough and bland tomato sauce. I was lucky to get a bite of cheese as well. Whoever cut the pie into 8 pieces did such a sloppy job – some pieces were literally 4 bites while some were 15. That was just annoying and it made it quite awkward for sharing (but let’s be honest, the $16 pizza itself was so small with such a skimpy amount of toppings that I could have easily crushed it all by myself).
Montmarte is my favorite restaurant on the Hill so maybe I was expecting too much from these folks. Or perhaps the French should just stick with what they know – pizza isn’t it.
So my question is, why the long line? I can drive to Valentino’s in Virginia and pick up a real pie in the time it took to get my order here.
