It’s another hot August day in DC!  Are you stuck in an office instead of enjoying the weather by a pool?  Yeah, me too.  So here’s some light reading to help you get through your morning.

  • DC Metrocentric and The Washington Post covered the progress on the new bike station at Union Station.
  • Frozen Tropics let us know that work has begun on a new Beer Haus in the 1300 block of H Street NE.
  • JDLand and her readers confirmed that Cornercopia is officially open!  From the pictures and early reviews, this place looks like one of the Hill’s best corner stores.  And its hours should make it a great stop for food on your way to a Nats game!
  • Capitol Hill BID‘s ambassadors were featured in the Washington Examiner for their dedicated work around the neighborhood.
  • DCist and Tommy Well‘s alerted us to some suspicious dumpster fires around the Hill.  Thankfully no one has been injured and none of the fires have spread to buildings yet, but please keep your eye out for anything suspicious!
  • Prince of Petworth was excited to hear about H Street’s newest bar, Little Miss Whiskey’s.  We tried to go a couple of weeks ago but it wasn’t yet open for business.  We promise a full review soon.

I’ve good things about Cornercopia. On the new beer garden, I agree with one of the comments on FT about perhaps too many bars on H and not enough regular retail or non-alchohol establishments. I hope Barracks Row can maintain a balance…and I’m still bummed about that cell phone shop taking up a great corner that should be a coffee house.

  2. I have to somewhat disagree about H Street having too many bars (and not just because I am the exact group that they are trying to pull in!). There are 2 great coffee shops, a fantastic sandwich place (Taylor’s), a pie shop and pizza place on the way, The Philadelphia Water Ice Factory (sooo good), and news of more things every day. And the Argonaut, which gets lumped into the bar category too quickly, is one of the more family-friendly restaurants on the Hill. And don’t forget about family day at H Street Country Club’s. Yes, those places serve alcohol, but they are striving to provide more for the neighborhood than being another bar that only opens at night for the drinking crowd.

Retail will make a great addition but it will take some time for it to happen. But with the attention that neighborhood is getting, I have faith that it won’t be too much longer.

I’m bummed about the Cricket store on Barracks Row too. I can think of a lot of types of stores that would have been great in that spot! Maybe Cricket won’t last long and something better will move in soon.
