Hill Haunts on "Best Of" List

July cover of Washingtonian magazine

July cover of Washingtonian Magazine

The July issue of Washingtonian is on newsstands around the city.  This month, writers ferreted out the “cool people, places and things to do” around the area this summer.  So how did the Hill measure up?  You’ll have a chance to share your opinion for our own “Best Of”, but in the meantime here’s a list of 7 spots Washingtonian considered notable neighborhood finds:

Granville Moore’s (1238 H St, NE): Best Happy-Hour Deal for those of us that love our mussels.  And those fries are pretty amazing too.  Check out the $10 mussels from 5-7p on Mondays.

Taqueria Nacional (400 N. Capitol St, NW): Tastiest Tacos; worth the trip for this breakfast and lunch takeout spot from Ann Cashion.

Good Stuff Eatery (303 Pennsylvania Ave, SE): Best Turkey Burger when you’re looking for a tasty, juicy alternative AND Best Milkshakes when you want a summertime treat.

What are your favorite Hill activities or locales?  Weigh in!

With multiple outlets in the area, including Hill locations near Nationals Park and NoMa, Five Guys made the list for Fabulous Fries and #2 Reader Favorite for Comfort Food.  Also according to readers, Matchbox (521 8th St, SE) is the #1 place to go for Sliders.

Need entertainment options for the deluge of vacationing guests on the horizon?  Washingtonian recommends the Capitol Historical Society Walking Tour that, for $10, will show you around the Capitol grounds and share tidbits about everything from landscaping to architecture.  Tours meet at 10a Mondays at the top of the Union Station Metro escalator.  No reservations required.

Do you music lovers want something more low key?  Fort Dupont makes the list for Best Free Jazz and R&B with well-known performers such as Herbie Mann and Wynton Marsalis.  Performances are at the amphitheater each Saturday from July 18-August 22; 8pm, rain or shine.

Elsewhere in the July issue you’ll find a profile of Leah Daniels, owner of Hill’s Kitchen (713 D St, SE) and a New and Noteworthy blurb on H Street Country Club (1335 H St, SE).

Congrats to neighborhood locales that made the list!  But we all know there are many other places on the Hill that were overlooked.  What are your favorite places for cool summer drinks?  Al fresco dining?  Taking the dog out for a stroll?  Picking up a tasty dessert?  Getting in a good run?  Picking up all the necessities for a warm-weather home improvement project?  Finding the perfect gift for mom’s birthday?  Getting that haircut that makes you look fab?  What are your favorite places on the Hill?

Post your comments below and we’ll compile them for our own Best of Capitol Hill.

My favorite place is Sidamo’s Coffee and Tea!

Actually, Sidamo’s does seem to get kudos all around so I’m surprised it wasn’t on their list somewhere. Wait … lemme check … they did get a good review for Dirt Cheap Eats 2008 with special mention as a spot where you’ll “want to linger”.
